Soul to Soul: Moral Values in Film

Thursday, May 29, 7 pm

At this our last class for this church year, were delighted to announce that we have obtained a copy of Frida before its video release. Oscar-nominated in six categories, including Best Actress for Salma Hayak, this rewarding film is about the controversial, vibrant and haunted-by-pain Mexican artist who was married to Diego Rivera (The riveting Alfred Molina). Other roles are filled by Geoffrey Rush as Trotsky, Edward Norton as Rockefeller,Antonio Banderas, and Ashley Judd. Julie Taymor, who was responsible for the brilliant Lion King on Broadway, directs with a real flair for incorporating Kahlos well known paintings. Producer Salma Hayak, a Mexican herself, insisted on being true not only to Fridas reality but also to Mexicos culture, costumes, music, flora and fauna. This is a film which rewards the viewer on many levels. Come at 6:30, brown bag it if you wish, and look over some Frida Kahlo books from Pats library; the film begins at 7 in the StevensRoom. Soul to Soul meets either the fourth or last Thursday of each month (with the exception of November & December when we hold a single class). For further information, call Pat Jones, Katherine Watt, or Valerie Mead.

Ending Racism

We "strive.to end racism" as declared in our mission statement - but how do we end racism? FUSP's Anti-Racism Committee has developed an intensive one-day workshop for all members and friends, aimed at clarifying the personal, cultural and institutional aspects of racism and developing strategies to end this system so counter to our principles. November 2, 9 am - 5:30 pm. PRE- REGISTRATION REQUIRED.

The Anti-Racism Committee also offers Viewing Race: Film Series, a series of popular films dealing with the issues of race and racism followed by discussion held one Friday each month. Dates to be announced. Contact Carl Heath.
